TRANSPORTATION

Roads:
Most of the roads and motorways are good. Speed limit on the motorway is 120 km/hour, and national roads 90 km/hour and in localities 50 km/hour.

Public Transport:
Travelling by public transport in Portugal is good value for money. With the recently extended Metro system in Lisbon and the privatisation of Portugal's bus network means travellers have a greater choice of how to travel. Children under four travel free, from 4 to 12 years, and adults over 65 pay half the price.

Buses:
Buses or "autocarros" in Lisbon are more expensive than the Metro but cover a more extensive area. Remember when standing at the bus stop to get in the line, and when you your numbered bus or tram is coming, step out of the line and wave it down to stop it. If you do not signal, it may go by you, particularly it you are the only one at the stop.

Trams, Funiculars and elevators:
Modern long trams and the old pre-World War I models drive trough the town. The tram route 28 with the old model going up and down the Lisbon hills has become a must for tourists visiting the historic centre.

Metro:
The newly extended metro system provides the quickest and cheapest way to get around Lisbon. The metro stations are indicated by a large M. They are a showcase of the state of art for Portuguese artists.

Rail:
CP - Caminhos de Ferro de Portugal is the state owned company running the national rail network. Website: www.cp.pt . There are 6 railway stations in Lisbon: Santa Apolónio and the Estação do Oriente are for national and international connections. Estação Fluvial Terreiro do Paço is where you take a ferry boot to catch the train at Barreiro to the South. Cais do Sodré links Lisbon to Estoril and Cascais along the coast line. At Rossio you take the train to Sintra, and at the Ponte 25 de Abril the new train to Pragal on the other side of the Tejo River.

Ferry:
Transtejo operates most ferries going across the river from Estação Fluvial at Praça de Comércio and Belém to Trafaria or the car ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas.

Taxi:
Taxis in Lisbon are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. They are beige. You can hail taxis in the street, but if there is a taxi-stand nearby they may not stop for you. A tip of around 10% is normal.

Airports:
Besides Lisbon Airport Portugal has another 4 international airports: 2 on the continent - Porto in the North and Faro in the South, and on the islands: Funchal Airport for Madeira and Horta on the Azores.
